Tokyo's new fish market in Toyosu 豊洲市場

Tsukiji reborn in Toyosu!

Tsukiji Fish Market, a Tokyo institution where visitors could come to watch the auctions of impressive and the largest fish and seafood market globally, recently closed its doors. It has given way to a brand new market located not far away: the Toyosu fish market.

An impressive move

The new Toyosu fish market is located next to Shijomae station, in the district of Koto, about 2 kilometers from the old Tsukiji. Nearly 600 billion yen (~4.6 billion euros) have been invested in infrastructure, land purchases, and decontamination operations for this new site, covering 40.7 hectares (compared to 23.1 hectares for Tsujiki ). No less than 900 companies have followed the movement to relocate this vast market, representing daily goods of 3,000 tons, divided into 480 different kinds of fish and 270 species of fruits and vegetables, for a turnover of nearly 15 million dollars per day.

A modern market

The new market is set up in a state-of-the-art complex, ensuring the sterility and good hygiene of the fish, which are sold through 2 "markets": one for auction, the other for wholesale. . A third building is intended for primeurs. About forty stalls will be accessible to visitors, most of them located above the market. It should also be noted that the new complex includes a large rooftop, equipped with a lawn, and from which – in clear weather – you can see Mount Fuji on the horizon.

Attend the auction

The fish auction was the major attraction of the teeming and lively Tsukiji that had charmed so many visitors. In the new Toyosu market, attending this auction, which takes place every morning from 4:30 am, can no longer be done in the middle of buyers as in the past. For the moment, the onlooker can observe the scene from rooms located on heights. From January 2019, visitors will be able to approach but remain confined to a room separated from the market by a window.
