However, this situation paves the way for the introduction of new options for travelers. Among these is the new "Welcome Suica" card, designed specifically to meet the needs of tourists visiting Japan. This card offers a convenient alternative with a fixed validity period and no initial deposit requirement, making them ideal for temporary use during your stay.
Welcome Suica
The "Welcome Suica" card is a variant of the well-known Suica card, specially designed for travelers and visitors to Japan. This reloadable card offers a practical solution for travel and shopping in the Tokyo metropolitan area.
As an IC card, it can be used to access public transport such as local trains, buses and subways, as well as to make purchases from vending machines and konbini.
In addition to simplifying travel, the card acts as an electronic wallet, enabling fast and convenient payments on board trains, in partner stores and restaurants, as well as for cabs and station left luggage.
The main difference, apart from the adorable design, is that you won't have to pay the 500 yen (approx. 4 euros) deposit fee for the IC card itself. On the other hand, there is no refund possible for any balance remaining on the card, so you'll need to be careful when putting money on it.
The card is also only valid for 28 days from the date of purchase.
- The transport card costs 8 euros and is initially empty. You must then add funds of 1,000 yen, 2,000 yen, 3,000 yen, 4,000 yen, 5,000 yen or 10,000 yen (between 8 euros and 80 euros).
- Where can I buy the Welcome Suica card? You can buy it online, at JR EAST Travel Service Centers in Tokyo's airports and main railway stations, and at Narita airport. Card activation only takes place in Tokyo.
