Tokyo is the world's most populous metropolitan area, with 14 million people living in the central party of the city alone. From the JR Yamanote Line that loops through Tokyo's most significant districts, to facilities like the Odakyu Line that go from the inner city out to Kanagawa. 

Go from Shinjuku and Shibuya, hubs for culture and socialization, to charming neighborhoods that seamlessly blend residential and commercial. Eat at world class restaurants and modest izakayas. Appreciate both fine art and green parks. See historic temples and shrines and contemporary architecture, all in one city! Then, take the opportunity to get away from the center and see the amazing nature that surrounds the urban landscape. 

Day trips from Tokyo with a regional pass!

As the metropolitan capital, Tokyo is a destination in Japan that can't be missed. But deviate a bit from the world's most populated city, and you'll find places that carry the heart of Japan that many may not see. Head west to Kanagawa Prefecture for some of the area's most beloved getaways. Hakone offers gorgeous views of Mount Fuji on clear days while boasting the gorgeous Lake Ashi. This area is also known for relaxing hot springs and traditional ryokan inns to enjoy, and art lovers will cherish a chance to see the area's world-famous art museums. 

Also in Kanagawa is Kamakura, one of the earliest capitals of Japan and therefore rich in history. Prominent shrines and temples are all around the city, home to artifacts of ancient times. Kamakura is also home to a famous giant buddha statue, known as a daibutsu in Japanese. For a spot a bit more of the beaten path but well worth the time, Rai-Tei is a garden on the side of the mountains of Kanagawa with a lovely soba restaurant within, often sourcing ingredients like bamboo sprouts straight from the garden. 

Of course, the venerable Mount Fuji has to make an appearance for a complete trip to Japan, and the Five Lake Area including Kawaguchiko in Yamanashi, sits right at the famous volcano's base. The presence of the iconic mountain can be seen on clear days, and its presence can be felt everywhere. For a more standout, yet fun-filled time out in the area, the famous Fuji-Q Amusement Park provides thrills with one of the world's most famous natural landmarks in the background. 

Head to Tochigi, 100 kilometers north of Tokyo, and visit Nikko to see a destination popular with people all over Japan. Home to many UNESCO World Heritage Sites, gorgeous hiking trails, and dozens of relaxing onsens, this is a great getaway from the hustle and bustle of central Tokyo. 

Check out the area East of Tokyo to see another location that seems like a world away from the metropolitan center! In Saitama, Kawagoe and Chichibu are ideal destinations within the relatively modest prefecture. In Kawagoe, a taste of historic Japan can be had and Chichibu is famous for its Kannon Temple Pilgrimage, entailing a visit to 34 different Buddhist Temples in the area.
