The Heian period (794 - 1185): the golden age of classical Japanese culture
The Heian period, from 794 to 1185, is considered the golden age of classical Japanese culture. However, from the second half of the 11th century, Fujiwara power began to decline, particularly in the face of the rise of the retired emperors (insei) who sought to regain control of the government.
