How to prepare for the ascent of Mount Fuji?
Imagine, on top of this incredible volcano at 4 am, admiring the sunrise ... What are you wearing? We can imagine the icy wind blowing at the top. Put away the sandals and take out the waterproof ski jacket! It is unthinkable to climb Mount Fuji without suitable equipment.
The mountain climate is temperamental, and you don't want to regret not putting at least a windbreaker in your suitcase before getting on the plane. Take the old hiking shoes out of the closet (new shoes can give you blisters!). Or, you will have to buy the equipment locally to start the ascent in the best conditions.

For the more experienced, daring, accustomed to expeditions, will not need to spend more for the ascend. But in addition to warm clothes and good shoes, a headlamp is a must if you are climbing at night! Also, it may be a good idea to buy trekking poles, as the trail can get rough at times. Finally, additional provisions, well protected in your waterproof backpack. Plan to carry two liters of water, even though there are water stations along the way and at the top, you can never be too careful! For snacks, granola bars, and other easy-to-eat snacks are recommended.
Just before your adventure, withdraw cash and make sure you have some small change. As in many places in Japan, credit cards are not accepted and it is better to have 100 yen coins for a clean rental restroom!
How to go to Mount Fuji?
The cost of the trip will not be the same depending on the city you are coming from and the path you plan to take for the ascent. Renting a car can also be a good alternative to the bus departing Tokyo!
The most heavily traveled Yoshida Trail is also the best served. Count 5,400 yen (around $47/41€) for a return trip from Tokyo to the fifth station by bus. From Kyoto, the most practical is to take a night bus to Kawaguchiko then a second bus to the trailhead. The ten-hour journey will cost you 18,500 yen (around $161/141€).

How is the ascent of Mount Fuji? Budget and costs
First of all, you have to decide whether you prefer to climb the mountain on your own or accompanied by a guide, as this would significantly increase the budget for the excursion. But you will learn more things with a professional leading the way.
Since 2013, a contribution of 1,000 yen ($9/8€) has been requested from climbers by the prefectures of Yamanashi and Shizuoka for conservation. However, this mountain toll is not compulsory.
The most popular and ideal route is to climb in the afternoon, sleep in a refuge after dark, then finish the climb just before sunrise (around 4 am). To do this, you will need to reserve a place in one of the many shelters located between the 5th station and the summit.
The short night spent among many other budding climbers will cost you between 5,000 and 9,000 yen ($43/38€ - $78/69€), plus dinner and/or breakfast. Some shelters offer online reservations in English!

Finally, don't forget the extras! How about enjoying a bowl of ramen on the rooftop of Japan? Or the opportunity to send a postcard from the peak of the mountain? There are many shops at the top and offer snacks and food.
Conclusion: for two people departing from Tokyo, not counting the equipment and without calling a guide, the adventure will cost you around 30,000 yen (around $260/230€) if you spend a night in a refuge - you will leave with a light wallet and heavy legs, but with incredible memories and photos.
