Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art 京都国立近代美術館

Tokyo does not benefit, or no longer, from a cultural and artistic monopoly in Japan. Kyoto, which has its MOMAK, has nothing to envy to the capital's MOMAT. In 1967, what was once a simple annex of the Tokyo institution became an independent museum, with increasingly important presentations. In addition to a conservation mission by rotating its permanent collections, the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto temporarily exhibits photographers, nihonga (traditional Japanese painting) painters, Western artists ... Its major retrospectives, such as that of the painter Kayo Yamaguchi (1899-1984) or ceramicist Kanjiro Kawai (1890-1966), his lighting on cultural themes, like the one on the advertising poster in Japan in 2012, make him a reference beyond Kyoto. Located opposite the path that leads to Heian-jingu and the canal that comes from Lake Biwa, the museum has a tea room with a very pleasant view and a bookstore, which sells the catalogs of previous exhibitions.
