The former Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art (Kyoto-shi Bijutsu Kan) was under renovation and reopened in May 2020 as Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art with the exhibition Hiroshi Sugimoto – Post Vitam.
Directly across the street from the Museum of Modern Art in Okazaki is a wonderful old pile: Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art (formerly Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art). The Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art was founded in 1933, and still gets many of the must-see exhibitions that come down from Tokyo. A new annex was opened in 2000, which increased gallery space.

Collections
The permanent collection of the Kyocera Museum of Art, formerly the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art consists of about 2100 items that include Japanese paintings, Western paintings, sculpture, handicrafts, calligraphy, and prints.
Once a year or so a blockbuster show comes to town. French impressionism is very popular, and the building will be packed.
