The Hill ラ コリーナ
cake hill
In the middle of the rice fields, La Collina, an innovative complex with a poetic name, brings together in one and the same place confectionery shops, pastry shops, restaurants, a café, farms and the headquarters of the Taneya company, located in Omihachiman for 146 years.
In the kingdom of pastry
In January 2015 appeared in the middle of nature, not far from Lake Biwa, La Collina, a very beautiful installation dedicated to pastry , initiated by the confectionery and catering company Taneya . The origin of this wagashi maker is an Edo period merchant family, owner of a cereal seed and vegetable store in Omihachiman.
It was in 1872 that the heir to the 7th generation, YamamotoHisayoshi, trained in pastry in Kyoto, transformed the stall into a wagashi shop. At the end of the Second World War, kurimanjû (cakes stuffed with anko and chestnut) became the specialty of Taneya. Then, at the very beginning of the 1950s, the pastry shop began to make yôgashi (Western pastries) including succulent baumkuchen via a specialized subsidiary called Club Harie. As the firm itself likes to point out, La Collina de Taneya was born from a seed.
In harmony with nature
La Collina, with a total area of more than 115,000 m², houses the head office of Taneya, a Club Harie pastry shop where succulent baumkuchen are made on site, acastella pastry shop, a café, a food court bringing together several restaurants , a souvenir shop in a 1950s garage setting, the “J'oublie le temps” bakery , small farms, a vegetable market , a forest, a pond and rice fields; just that ! Its main building with a green roof is the work of architect Terunobu Fujimori.
Other work by Fujimori: The Shinshoji Zen Museum and Gardens
A follower of natural materials and ancestral construction techniques, Fujimori delivers a modern and original building in complete harmony with its environment. As the name La Collina suggests, the architect wanted to recreate a hill with sloping roofs covered with vegetation.
For gourmets and gourmands
On the 1st floor, the baumkuchen pastry shop has a production workshop where you can observe the know-how of the pastry chefs. On the walls, old wooden wagashi molds tell the whole story of Taneya. In the Castella store, the majestic chestnut pillars come from Nagano prefecture, where Fujimori is a native; trees rigorously selected by the architect himself. Stop at the café located on the 2nd floor, whose furniture has been carved from trees from the surrounding mountains. Facing the menu, the choice will be difficult!
Will you be tempted by the tasty and melting classic baumkuchen or by one of its variations (shortbread baumbuchen, baumkuchen in the form of a cream-filled biscuit, etc.)?
Where people and nature meet
La Collina is one of those places that is difficult to describe as it has many facets . This site, Taneya wanted it to be innovative, global and eco-responsible . Rooted in Omihachiman, the company is deeply attached to its local land, to its preservation and transmission to future generations. Placing agriculture at the heart of the project, Taneya created this place to allow people to reconnect with nature and learn more about the cultivation of the land through small farms and workshops open to everyone.
As for the local farmers, they supply their products to the market, bakery, restaurants and pastry shops. In its ecological and responsible commitment , Taneya claims to follow the sustainable development goals set by the United Nations in September 2015, ensuring that its activities are as close as possible to them. The development of La Collina is a long-term one. Its plantation of trees, the “Bosco della memoria”, is a forest in the making. La Collina, an anthill of activities implemented for the common good, is a place you have to experience to understand its essence and appreciate all its faces.
