Yunotsu-onsen 温泉津温泉
Therapeutic water
Yunotsu is famous for its hot springs, very hot, and active waters to refresh your mind and body. The waters of this nostalgic little port against the Sea of Japan are historically renowned for their healthy effect on the whole body!
We are in Shimane prefecture, near the city of Oda, Yunotsu is a village with a nostalgic atmosphere that is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site with the site of Iwami Ginzan (Iwami Silver Mine).
source of prosperity
In Yunotsu, the spring was discovered 1,300 years ago and developed the area. Between the 16th and 19th centuries, the port of Yunotsu knew a strong activity and an important prosperity thanks to the export of the silver ore of Iwami, then world-famous and required for the work in goldsmithery.
After the Iwami mine closed in 1923, activity declined. Only this small port remains as a living testimony to all these beautiful times.
Even today this village conceals old and historic buildings, several of which are listed, which gives soul to the place and will certainly touch your sensitivity.

Beneficial water
This ancient spring attracts traditional hot spring enthusiasts from all over Japan today, as it is renowned for its beneficial effects. In addition to bathing in it, it is possible to drink the water from this source which will actively act on your diabetes, intestinal, and stomach problems. This action, certified by the Onsen Association of Japan, is very effective, much more than simply soaking in it.
Yunotsu's water quality is rated 5/5 out of six categories. There are only 19 others of this quality across the country. During the past centuries, the workers of the silver mine came there to relax and especially to treat their back pain.
To take full advantage of the benefits of this magical water, you must visit the public baths of Yunotsu. Here are two good addresses:
- Yakushiyu
The water springs here at 45-46°, for a general water temperature of around 42°, and has a green-brown color because it contains a lot of iron. After the bath, a restroom awaits you on the panoramic terrace, with self-service coffee. From the latter, you can admire the jewels of the local heritage. Open every day from 8 am to 9 pm, from 6 am on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays.
Right next to Yakushiyu, a former public bath has been transformed into a cafe, for lunch or simply to rest while admiring this superb place. It is open from 11 am to 5 pm and is closed on Thursdays.
- Motoyu
The water is very hot, you have to be able to withstand the 47° of the normal bath and even the 44° of what the regulars call the "lukewarm" bath! Perhaps you will only be able to slip your feet into it, no more.

- Do not stay more than two to three minutes in the water then go out to rest nearby. Repeat the operation several times.
