Osaka, the third largest city in Japan, has an incredible multipurpose building to match its ambitions: Osaka-jo Hall.
Osaka-jo Hall is a gigantic concert hall in Osaka that can hold up to 16,000 spectators. Built in 1983 to mark the 400th anniversary of the construction of Osaka Castle, it is located in Osaka-jo Park, a large green space for locals.
The room was designed in harmony with the environment and fits perfectly into the landscape. The use of granite rocks for the construction of the walls blends well with the castle walls. The oval roof of the hall is a particularly successful architectural element.
A concert at the castle
Osaka-jo Hall is a high-tech facility that hosts multiple events in the cultural and sports sectors, as well as trade shows, fairs and exhibitions.
Annex rooms and a restaurant complete the complex. It's a place close to the heart of the Japanese, who experience intense emotions there during the musical concerts of popular artists and international stars. Artists that have performed there include Elton John, U2, Celine Dion and Mariah Carey, as well as J-Rock groups such as Dir En Grey.
When it comes to sport, the hall hosts all the most prestigious disciplines and competitions: tennis tournaments, volleyball games, sumo wrestling, and boxing.
The event of the year
Every year since the hall was built, on the first Sunday of December, Daiku, a highlight of the musical calendar, has been held at the hall. 10,000 singers perform Symphony No. 9 by Beethoven and his Ode to Joy to the words of the German poet Friedrich Schiller. Conductor Yutuka Sado conducts the orchestra, and professional soloists are accompanied by amateur singers. Imagine attending an event on such a scale!
