Your trip in detail

Itinerary

  • Day 1 : Wake up in Tokyo 東京

Arrive at Tokyo airport (Narita NRT or Haneda HND).
    Welcome to Japan! Yokoso 日本へようこそ!

Welcome through customs by our airport assistant, who will give you all your travel documents and your Pocket WiFi.
Unaccompanied transfer from the airport to Tokyo:

The transfer is done in a shared shuttle or bus, with other guests departing for the same hotel, or a hotel close to yours. These transfers depart between 1.5 and 3 hours after your scheduled flight arrival, and other stops may be made before your hotel.

If you would like a private, non-stop transfer directly after the arrival of your flight, feel free to add the "Private Taxi from the Airport" option.

Check in at Hotel OMO3 Tokyo Akasaka by Hoshino Resorts or similar category 3* hotel (rooms available from 3pm).

  • Day 2 : First steps in the capital

What can you do in Tokyo on your first day?

We recommend that you start your visit to Tokyo slowly, by visiting the following areas:
Harajuku, the center of youth fashion and cosplay culture
    Meiji Jingu, the imperial shrine
Takeshita-Dori, a must-see street full of trendy stores and crepe stands
    Omotesando, a tree-lined shopping avenue known as Tokyo's Champs-Élysées
Shibuya and its iconic giant pedestrian crossing

One of our many experienced English-speaking guides can also accompany you to visit the classic sights of Tokyo (optional, from 9am to 5pm).

  • Day 3 : The big loop

For this second day of sightseeing in Tokyo, we recommend the following "loop".

Start at Tokyo Central Station, with its original architecture, then head off to visit:
    - Ginza, Tokyo's high-end shopping district
    - Tsukiji, the bustling outdoor food market
    - Hama-rikyu, a peaceful Japanese garden between Tokyo's tall buildings
    - Asakusa, a traditional district and place of pilgrimage, accessible by cruise on the Sumida river
    - Senso-ji, the oldest Buddhist temple in the Japanese capital
    - Tokyo Sky Tree, 643 metres high, with its panoramic view of Tokyo at sunset.

Between Hama-rikyu Garden and Asakusa, why not enjoy a cruise on the Sumida River ?

  • Day 4 : A breathtaking view of Fuji

In the morning, send your luggage to your hotel in Matsumoto (details in your travel diary, check with the hotel reception) so that you can travel light for your night in Kawaguchiko.

Go to Tokyo station and board a train for Kawaguchiko (3h journey, 1 change, details in your travel guide, included in your package). The train leaves the Japanese megalopolis and gradually winds its way through the valleys of the Mount Fuji region. You will arrive in Kawaguchiko in the late morning.

Upon arrival, stash your bags at your hotel, conveniently located near the station. Then, it's finally time to delve into the wonders of the Five Lakes region!
    - Capture Mount Fuji framed by the iconic Chureito Pagoda and be prepared for a rewarding climb - the view is worth every step
    - Next, embark on a scenic lake hopping adventure. Each glistening lake reflects Mount Fuji's majestic peak, offering countless opportunities for stunning photos
    - Take the Kachi Kachi Ropeway for a breathtaking panorama of both the lake and Mount Fuji.

Consider renting a bike for a half-day adventure around scenic Lake Kawaguchiko, capturing stunning views of Mount Fuji along the way!

  • Day 5 : Nature and mountain lakes

    Breakfast at the hotel.

In the morning, soak up the beauty of Kawaguchiko and its surroundings. Then, in the afternoon, embark on a scenic train journey (approximately 3h30 with two transfers) that will whisk you away to Matsumoto, nestled in the heart of the majestic Japanese Alps.

Once arrived, check into your hotel located in the city centre, between the station and the castle.

  • Day 6 : The Samurai Castle

    Breakfast at the hotel.

Steeped in history, Matsumoto has preserved many traces of its prosperity from the feudal period. Yet, the crown jewel of the city is its imposing castle, nicknamed the "Crow" for its dramatic black exterior. This magnificent structure, the oldest of its kind in Japan, offers breathtaking panoramic views year-round.

Beyond its historical charm, Matsumoto thrived as an industrial and commercial center. Even today, the Nakamichi district preserves a unique collection of workshops from the Meiji era, offering a glimpse into the city's bustling past.

Discover the secrets of Matsumoto with a captivating half-day private tour and explore the city's rich history, including its iconic feudal castle and charming historical districts. This experience allows you to delve deeper into the past, perhaps even step into the shoes of a samurai for a morning with our expert guide Sylvain.

During peak season, this tour may be substituted with a half-day guided tour in Tokyo.

    Second night in Matsumoto.

  • Day 7 : Mountain air

There are several choices for this day:
    - Continue visiting Matsumoto, including its famous Japanese prints at the Ukiyo-e Museum
    - Visit a nearby wasabi farm
    - Enjoy a day in the region of Nagano, famous for having hosted the Winter Olympic Games, (1 hour by train, included in your package) and visit the famous Zenko-ji temple, then the natural site of Jigokudani with monkeys that soak in the hot springs (optional)
    - In summer, Kamikochi is a breath of fresh air in the middle of the Japanese mountains.

Last night in your hotel in Matsumoto.

  • Day 8 : Japanese Villages

In the morning, send your luggage to your hotel in Takayama (details in your travel diary, check with the hotel reception) so that you can travel light for your night in Tsumago.

Leave for Tsumago, one of the most beautiful villages in Japan, in the heart of the Kiso Valley. The train (2 hours, included in your package) runs through this narrow, densely wooded valley. Halfway along the route, we recommend a stop in the small hidden village of Narai, with beautiful houses dating from the Edo period.

Upon arrival in Tsumago, you will reach your minshuku accommodation (a comfortable family inn, halfway between ryokan and guesthouse) on foot (45 minutes through the mountains) or by bus (10min, bus tickets available from the driver, about 200 yen, details in your travel guide).

Tsumago is a listed village with traditional architecture. Kept from modernity, it has preserved its character as a stopover town along the Kyoto - Tokyo road from the Edo period (1603 - 1868): the Nakasendo. A visit to the Honjin (with its delightful moss garden), Wakihonjin and Shiryokan complexes is particularly interesting and relaxing.

In the evening, have dinner at your minshuku.

  • Day 9 : Trekking on the Nakasendo trail

    Enjoy breakfast at your minshuku.

Hike along the Nakasendo River to Magome (8km, with big elevation changes: from 420m (Tsumago), to the Magome - Toge pass (800m) and back down to Magome (600m). Allow 3 to 5 hours). A bus also allows you to go directly to Magome (in 30min, 570 yen purchase from the driver) to avoid the hike.

Please note that there is also a luggage transport service at the tourist office, if needed.

After arriving in the small village of Magome at noon and taking a stroll in this picturesque village, you will reach Nakatsugawa Station (bus, 25min, €4.50 to be paid to the driver) then Takayama (4 hours, 1 change, all included with your JR Pass).

Arrive in Takayama in the evening, at your comfortable hotel near the station. You'll be able to relax after a busy day with your head full of memories.

  • Day 10 : The charm of the Japanese mountains

Enjoy the charms of Takayama  at your own pace, its century-old homes, temples and museums.

    We recommend you to visit:
    - The traditional Kusakabe and Yoshijima houses
    - The Yatai Kaikan Exhibition Hall, where old religious festival "matsuri" floats are on display
    - The picturesque Showa-kan, museum on the 1940-70s
    - The old Sannomachi shopping district
    - The Fuji Folk Art Museum

Included: About 15 minutes by train from the city of Takayama is the town of Hida-Furukawa, a rustic, authentic village. Around Hida-Furukawa is the countryside of Japan, where time seems to stand still. There, you can take a bike ride through the farming villages and rural landscapes of the Hida countryside. A perfect activity to see the opposite of the cities, and breathe the fresh mountain air.

Second night in your hotel in Takayama.

  • Day 11 : Rural & Mountain

Starting from Takayama, we suggest a day trip to a traditional village in the Japanese Alps, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site: Shirakawago!

Board a convenient bus to Shirakawago (included in your package) and immerse yourself in this charming village nestled in the Japanese Alps. Stroll through this UNESCO World Heritage Site village and marvel at the traditional gassho-style farmhouses with their iconic steep thatched roofs.

Consider stepping inside a minka, a traditional Japanese house, to get a glimpse into the local way of life. For those seeking spiritual serenity, a visit to the Myozen-ji temple, the village's Zen temple, is a must.

In the middle of the afternoon, head to Kanazawa by bus (1h15 journey, included in your package). As an option, you can instead decide to stay in Shirakawago for one night, in a traditional lodging in the village.

On arrival, settle into your traditional Japan Experience house! A Travel Angel will welcome you, show you the house and help you to have an unforgettable stay in Kanazawa. You'll be able to "live the Japanese way" for a few days, in a space much bigger than a hotel room and with a kitchen to prepare your own food, if desired!

    Night in Kanazawa.

  • Day 12 : Head for the Sea of Japan!

Explore Kanazawa, a city between tradition and modernity on the coast of Japan:

Discover Kanazawa, between the northern sea and the Japanese Alps:
    - Kenroku-en, Kanazawa's magnificent Japanese garden
    - The Museum of Contemporary Art and its outdoor gallery
    - Omicho, the Sea of Japan fish market
    - Nomura House, home of the samurai, and its picturesque old quarter

Overnight stay at your house in Kanazawa.

  • Day 13 : The pearl of Japan

For this day, a few options are available:
    - Continue exploring Kanazawa (add an English-speaking guide for one day, optional)
    - Discover the Noto Peninsula's Japanese countryside with one of our guides (optional)
    - Other activities, such as a meal with one of our English-speaking travel angels in Kanazawa

Final night in your traditional Kanazawa house.

  • Day 14 : Japanese wellness

Take a leisurely trip to Kaga Onsen (25 minutes by train, included), a hot spring town in the middle of the Japanese countryside

Kaga Onsen awaits, with its high quality natural spring waters, first discovered 1300 years ago, as well as traditional Japanese craftsmanship and picturesque nature walks.

It's the ideal place to relax and soak in one of the local hot spring baths, which are said to have healing properties that improve digestion and relieve muscle pain. You can also enjoy local specialities during dinner at your Mori no Sumika Resort & Spa ryokan (or equivalent).

  • Day 15 : The old capital

    Breakfast at your hotel.

In 2 hours, reach Kyoto and check into the RAKURO 京都 by THE SHARE HOTELS hotel (or equivalent).

You have 3 days to visit Kyoto.
Start in the afternoon in the historic Gion district, close to your accommodation:
    - Kiyomizu-Dera, the impressive water temple
    - The historic streets of Sannen-zaka & Ninnen-zaka
    - Kodai-ji, Kyoto's temple of maple trees and bamboo

Finish your day with a stroll through the Gion district and enjoy the sunset.
Meet your guide at 7pm to start an evening walk around Gion, Kyoto's historic district. More details on the exact day and meeting point will be in your travel guide.

At the end of this 1h30 walk, your guide will be able to recommend the best places to eat dinner.
Please note that it's strictly forbidden to take pictures in the historic district of Gion.

  • Day 16 : Gold and Silver Treasures

For your second day in Kyoto, we recommend the following itinerary:
    - The Zen garden of Ryoan-ji with its famous rock garden
    - Kinkaku-ji (the iconic Golden Pavilion
    - Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion)

One of our many experienced English-speaking guides can accompany you on a tour of these iconic sites (available as an option, from 9am to 5pm).

  • Day 17 : Now for some activity...

This is your last full day to visit Kyoto, so why not make the most of our many optional activities:

    - If you're in the mood to explore the Japanese countryside, why not try a trip to Ohara or try our popular activity: On the Tea Road!

You can also reach Nara in 50 minutes by train (not included in your package, 720 yen one way, otherwise use a Kansai Railway Pass (optional).

For your last night, stop to see the sunset at the Fushimi Inari-taisha, Kyoto's incredible shrine of 10,000 torii gates that wind their way up Inariyama mountain.

  • Day 18 : Sayonara, and see you next time

Take a direct transfer to Kansai International Airport (included but not accompanied).

This transfer is by shuttle or shared bus, with other customers departing from the same hotel or a hotel close to yours. These transfers arrive between 3 hours and 1.5 hours before the actual departure of your flight, and stops can be made before you arrive at the airport.

If you prefer a private transfer at a time of your choice, direct to the airport and with no intermediate stops, select the "Private Taxi to Airport" option when booking.

  • Your travel documents will be given to you as follows:
    • Travel diary by email at least 20 days before departure, as well as other electronic documents
    • Paper documents (airport transfer ticket, transportation card, Japan Rail Pass voucher) and Pocket WiFi upon arrival at the airport by our airport assistant.
  • No ticket is provided for airport transfers to Kansai airport. The reservation is booked in the name you provided when booking with us.
  • In very rare cases, mostly in very high season, the tour steps might be reversed. You will be informed in your travel-guide. Thanks for your kind understanding.

Your accommodation :

  • Some hotels may ask you to pay a tourist tax on arrival. This depends on the city and even the hotel, as some do not include it in the booking price. Normally, it is ¥200/night/person (about £1/$1.30) but can be slightly higher in 4* hotels. It must be paid in cash at the hotel reception. For traditional Japan Experience accommodations, it's included in the tour price.
  • Room size: in Japan, a densely populated country where everything is compact, 3-star hotels are of very good quality but the rooms are often quite small (12 to 20m2/129 sq ft to 215 sq ft) depending on the hotel. Please note the size of a single room, between 10 and 16m2 (107sq ft and 172 fq ft). For more comfort, you can choose our luxury 4* accommodation upgrade option.
  • Double room: Rooms for two people in western hotels have 2 single beds (twin rooms) by default, which can usually be joined together. As an option, you can select a double room instead of a twin if you prefer a double bed. This option is not possible in the Kanazawa traditional house accommodation.
  • Single room: People travelling alone and wishing to book a single room must pay a supplement at the time of booking. The single room supplement is compulsory for all orders with an odd number of participants. Please note that if you request more than two people in a single room, the single room supplement will be applied to all accommodation except for the ryokans (3 and 4*). In fact, as this is traditional accommodation, people with the same reservation are all grouped together in spacious rooms for up to 5 people.
  • 3-person room: If there are 3, 5 or more of you and you do not select the single supplement, a triple room will be allocated to you.
  • In the case of a group order (over 5 people), it's possible, depending on hotel availability, that not all members of the group will be accommodated in the same hotel. Of course we will aim to keep you as close as possible.
  • Names of the hotels: The names given on the site are for information only. In the event of unavailability, a hotel of equivalent standing will be booked. Hotels, corresponding to local standards, are given as an indication only and may be changed on site for hotels of a similar standard.
  • In a ryokan, guests sleep on comfortable futons on tatami mats. Rooms have a private sink and toilet. As is customary in Japanese ryokan, the onsen bathroom is shared (not mixed sex) unless you select the "private bathroom in the room" option.
OPTIONAL: Enjoy a private Japanese bathroom in your room. This option is recommended for mixed couples, families, people who are modest or have visible tattoos.
The 4* ryokan (see 4* option) have comfortable futons raised on either western beds in a traditional tatami room. The bathrooms and toilets of the 4* ryokan are private.
  • In the minshuku, you will sleep on comfortable futons in tatami rooms. WC and bathrooms are shared. The bath can be made private on request at reception (subject to availability).
  • Traditional house in Kanazawa: each house has been chosen for its location (transport, shops, temples...) for your convenience. All lodgings have at least one Japanese tatami room and a minimum of 3 beds, either single western bed (not double) or futon. Please let us know if you want to sleep in a western bed.

Your transport :

  • Flights are not included in this tour. Please contact us if you would like to include flights in your order: Flights in economy class with stopovers or direct flights, eco-premium or business air upgrades, provincial departures or abroad: we will be able to advise you.
  • The tour departure and end dates on this page relate to your stay in Japan. You will arrive in Japan via Tokyo (Narita or Haneda airports) and depart from Kansai airport (KIX, not Itami ITM). On departure, you will have to leave Europe the day before and land at 6:30pm. at the latest to make the most of the airport services of your tour (welcome and transfer to Tokyo).
The return flight should be on the same day due to the time difference, departing 9am at the earliest. Please consult us if you need advice on your choice of international flights.
  • If the flights have been purchased by you, independently of Japan Experience, you must send us your flight information (flight number, airport, date and time of arrival) at least one month in advance to allow us organise your welcome and airport transfer.
  • Airport Transfers: The shared limousine bus leaves from the airport and stops either in front of your hotel or at a stop within 1-15 minutes walk from your hotel. Our airport assistant in Tokyo will show you to the platform to take the airport transfer. The transfer to the hotel is unaccompanied. If you prefer to be accompanied from the airport to your hotel reception, please choose the option "Accompanied Airport Transfer" when booking. The transfer is done in a shared shuttle or bus, with other travelers leaving for the same hotel or a hotel close to yours. These transfers leave between 1.5 and 3 hours after your flight's scheduled arrival and stops may be made before your hotel. If you would like a private, non-stop transfer directly after the actual arrival of your flight, please select the "Private Taxi from the Airport" option. Please note that due to the many changes in airline flight schedules, if your airline notifies you of a change in arrival time less than 72 hours before your departure, and it is over 45 minutes, we cannot guarantee your airport transfer. You will then have to take a taxi at your own expense, requesting a refund from your airline due to the schedule change. The same applies to your return journey: 72 hours before your return flight, we cannot change the shuttle schedule. Similarly, you will have to take a taxi booked with the hotel, at your own expense, with reimbursement requested from your airline being the only solution. Japan Experience is not responsible for last minute schedule changes. On the way back, the shared shuttle bus leaves from your hotel or very close by to take you directly to Kansai airport (KIX) in 1 hour 30 minutes.
  • Included in your tour is a pre-charged transport card of loaded with ¥1,500 (around £8 / $10) (Suica or Icoca brand); a Japan Rail Pass 14 days, a Fuji Hakone Pass 3 days, bus tickets for Takayama > Shirakawago and bus tickets for Shirakawago > Kanazawa. These cards and passes should cover a large part of your trips during the stay. After the ¥1,500 on your transport card runs out, or if the line you are travelling on is not covered by any of your passes, your travel will be at your own expense by recharging your pre-paid transport card (at ticket machines in all stations and metro stations, cash only).
  • The Japan Rail Pass is a personal train pass for foreign travellers visiting Japan. The pass allows unlimited travel for 14 consecutive days on all Japan Railways (JR) trains throughout Japan. You will receive a voucher to be exchanged at a JR office when you are welcomed at the airport by our assistant (list of office locations provided in your travel guide). You will be asked to show your passport and fill in a form. During this exchange, you will need to select the start date of your pass. Once your Pass has been activated, it will be valid for 14 consecutive days from the date chosen. To prevent wasting time when you arrive at the airport, we recommend exchanging your voucher upon arrival in central Tokyo. This is because exchanging it at the airport could cause you to miss your airport shuttle. With your Japan Rail Pass in hand, just go to the station, insert the pass in the ticket gate (or show it to the ticket inspector at the gate) and board any JR train. Non-express trains in Japan are mostly open seating. If you are worried about not having a seat (on a Shinkansen for example), simply go to a ticket office and reserve a seat at no extra charge. The Japan Rail Pass covers all JR and Shinkansen lines in Japan. The following journeys are not covered:
    • Travel by metro and bus within cities (payable by pre-paid transport card, included in your package)
    • Transfers from the train station to your hotels (by foot, bus, metro or taxi)
    • Travel on private train lines (non-JR lines)
    • Travel on Nozomi and Mizuho high-speed trains (Shinkansen). It is possible to take these trains but a supplement fee is required
    • Trips made outside the validity period of your Japan Rail Pass
  • Japan Rail Pass: It is not necessary to have a Japan Rail Pass which covers your entire stay. This would only be only cost-effective if used for long journeys between the different locations of your stay (especially on the Shinkansen), which are very expensive. In large cities like Tokyo, only about ⅓ of public transport is covered by the Japan Rail Pass and getting around is relatively cheap (Tokyo metro tickets: £1/$2; Kyoto daily bus card: £3.50/$5). So providing you with a Japan Rail Pass for 21-days instead of 14 would not be cost-effective and would actually significantly increase the cost of your trip.
  • If a person taking part in the tour is a Japanese national and resident of Japan, or a foreigner living in Japan (including students), then that person is not eligible for a Japan Rail Pass. Please contact us to get the price of the tour without a Japan Rail Pass. They will have to buy train tickets for the journeys on the spot in Japan. The Kansai Railway Pass is also subject to the same nationality/residency requirements. This is not the case for the Hakone Free Pass. If someone is a Japanese citizen but NOT a resident of Japan, then he/she can benefit from the Japan Rail Pass under certain conditions (contact us for details).

Your activities :

  • The airport reception is in English. Your airport assistant will be waiting for you at the customs exit holding a sign with the name you provided when booking. They will give you your travel documents and take you to your airport transfer. They will not accompany you to Tokyo (this is possible, but optional).
  • An English speaking Travel Angel who is a specialist in Japan will be there to welcome you to your traditional house in Kanazawa. They will give you the keys, explain how the house and its facilities work, give you a tour of the area (tourist sites, supermarkets, bike rental...) and answer all your questions. NOTE: breakfasts will be at your own expense in the Japan Experience traditional houses in Kanazawa.
  • Traditional Japanese dinner and Japanese breakfast (mostly savoury) are included in your Tsumago and Kaga Onsen stays. Please provide any dietary requirements you may have, we will pass them on to the accommodation so that they can take them into account when planning the meals. If the accommodation cannot take any of the dietary requirements into account, we cannot be held responsible and no compensation will be issued.
  • Japan Experience houses come with a fully equipped kitchens, and are located close to markets.
